Learn how to help a victim of knife crime

With over 50,000 knife crime incidents a year in the UK, there may be a chance that you might come across a patient who requires help after being injured.

We’ve put together a video showing you what you can do to help.

*** We’ve used fake wounds and fake blood to help demonstrate what a realistic wound looks like. If you don’t want to see this then don’t watch the video below. ***

Key Points:

  • Call 999 quickly and give the most accurate location possible.
  • Do not remove the weapon if it is still in situ
  • Apply pressure directly over the wound
  • If bleeding is squirting out then you may also need to apply pressure further up the limb
  • Help the patient into the recovery position if they lose consciousness but continue to stem the bleeding
  • Begin CPR if they stop breathing but continue to stem the bleeding

We hope that you’ll never need this information, but if you ever find yourself in this position, then hopefully you will feel more confident to help someone have the best chance of recovery after watching this. Don’t forget, as soon as you call 999 our emergency call takers will also talk you through all this.
