Knife crime campaign inspires first aid training

Following the knife crime awareness campaign we ran in February, Chloe Warner, teacher of health and social care at Banbury College, got in touch and asked if we could run an education and training event for students at Banbury College that would provide key information, advice and training for the students should they, or someone they’re with, ever be the victim of knife crime.

Paramedic team leader, Roan Waddelow, based at the nearby Adderbury Resource Centre, volunteered to organise a session for the students, which took place on Thursday, 20 March. On the day, Roan was supported by his colleague, Suzy Patience, a paramedic and clinical team educator also based at Adderbury. Both of them also went to Banbury College when they were younger so really enjoyed going back to meet the current students.

Roan and Suzy combined a presentation with practical first aid training which helped the students understand how to apply a tourniquet and use other techniques to stem catastrophic bleeding, as well as learn to carry out chest compressions (CPR) – techniques which could prove vital in helping a victim survive being stabbed whilst the emergency services are en route.

“The visit went really well from our perspective”, said Chloe. “The students loved the sessions and I was delighted that they all got really involved and hands on. Some of the students have created pieces of work after the session explaining what they had learnt and Roan and Suzy have even inspired some people to become paramedics or go to work in a clinical setting!”
